India Accelerates Indigenous AI Chip Manufacturing Push

Government Expands Semiconductor Strategy

NEW DELHI, May 4: India intensified its semiconductor ambitions after the Union government announced a fresh package of incentives aimed at boosting domestic artificial intelligence chip production. Officials stated that the initiative is intended to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and position India as a major global technology manufacturing destination.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology confirmed that new partnerships are being explored with private technology firms, research institutions, and international semiconductor companies. The latest proposal includes financial assistance for fabrication units, tax relief for component suppliers, and support for advanced packaging facilities.

Industry experts believe the move comes at a critical time as countries worldwide race to secure semiconductor supply chains amid rising geopolitical uncertainty and growing demand for AI-powered infrastructure.

Focus on AI and Data Centers

Government officials said India’s rising data center ecosystem and rapid adoption of generative AI technologies are driving demand for high-performance computing chips. Technology companies operating in India are expected to benefit from lower manufacturing costs and easier access to locally produced processors.

The plan also includes expanding skill development programs for engineers specializing in chip architecture, embedded systems, and nanotechnology manufacturing.

Analysts noted that successful execution of the policy could help India emerge as a long-term semiconductor hub in Asia.
