In Himachal Pradesh, devotees offered prayers and lit candles at the St. John in the Wilderness Church in Dharamshala. Priest Victor Khoji said the lighting of candles symbolises Jesus Christ as the light of the world.

Special prayers and Christmas Eve services were held at churches across the country, including Christ Church in Shimla, St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ranchi and St. Michael’s Church in Mumbai.

In Mumbai, devotees sang hymns and carols at the Church of Our Lady of Victories. Fr. Calistus Fernandes extended Christmas greetings, saying the festival spreads joy and reminds people of the presence of the Almighty. He also emphasised that Christianity does not compel anyone to follow the faith.

“Christmas is a season of joy, inner happiness and closeness to God. The celebrations reflect the beauty of the festival, which is rooted in love and peace,” he said.

In Jammu and Kashmir, preparations were underway at Srinagar’s Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Garrison Church in Jammu. Churches in Delhi, Bengaluru, Noida, Siliguri and Vijayawada were also decorated with lights, with large numbers of devotees offering prayers.

Kolkata’s iconic Park Street wore a festive look with lights, stars and Christmas cribs, drawing visitors and revellers. In Tamil Nadu, historic churches including the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Wesley Church and St. Stephen’s Church in the Nilgiris, along with St. Mary’s Cathedral in Madurai, were illuminated for the occasion.

Devotees also sang hymns and carols at the historic St. Mary’s Basilica in Secunderabad, adding to the festive fervour.
