India-China Relations Improve, Cooperation Over Differences: Wang Yi

Bilateral ties strengthen post-Ladakh standoff as both nations pursue cooperation and shared interests

BEIJING, Mar 26: India-China relations are steadily improving and moving along a “correct path,” with shared interests outweighing differences, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.

Speaking during a farewell meeting with outgoing Indian Ambassador Pradeep Rawat, Wang, also a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Political Bureau, highlighted the importance of strategic guidance from the leadership of both countries in fostering closer ties.

“China is ready to work with India to implement the key consensus reached by our leaders, view each other as partners rather than competitors, and embrace mutual development opportunities,” Wang stated.

Relations between India and China, which remained largely frozen following the 2020 Galwan Valley military standoff, have seen positive momentum since high-level meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan and the 2025 SCO summit in Tianjin.

Wang emphasized that as neighbouring major emerging economies, the two countries’ common interests far surpass their differences. “Without the modernisation of China and India, there can be no modernisation of the world,” he added.

He also underscored China’s willingness to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, protect the interests of the Global South, and strengthen multilateral collaboration within forums such as BRICS. India is slated to host the BRICS summit later this year, with Xi expected to attend.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s press release acknowledged Rawat’s contributions to the advancement of bilateral relations. Rawat will retire later this month and be replaced by current Indian Ambassador to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami.
