NEW DELHI, Aug 7: India and China reviewed the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) during diplomatic talks held in New Delhi under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the discussions covered boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism-building and trans-border cooperation. The two sides held what the ministry described as frank exchanges while assessing developments along the LAC.
According to the MEA, both countries emphasised that peace and tranquillity in border areas remain essential for the broader development of bilateral relations. The meeting was held a day before the ministry issued its statement on the talks.
India and China agreed to continue using existing diplomatic and military channels, including the WMCC framework, local commander-level meetings and other agreed mechanisms, to address outstanding issues and prevent misunderstanding or miscalculation along the LAC.
The ministry said the discussions also followed up on the outcomes of the latest Special Representatives talks and included detailed exchanges on border-related mechanisms and cooperation measures.
During the meeting, India reiterated the need for an early convening of the next expert-level mechanism on trans border rivers. The Indian side also highlighted the importance of timely sharing of technical information relating to upstream projects.
The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Chinese delegation was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s foreign ministry.
The talks are part of ongoing efforts by the two countries to maintain communication and manage border issues through established institutional mechanisms.
