NEW DELHI, May 22: India and Cyprus on Friday elevated their bilateral relationship to the level of a strategic partnership, marking a significant step toward deeper cooperation in trade, investment, maritime affairs and regional security.
The announcement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive discussions with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in New Delhi, where both leaders explored opportunities to strengthen economic engagement and expand collaboration across several strategic sectors.
The two nations also agreed to establish a joint task force aimed at promoting cooperation in infrastructure development, shipping and connectivity initiatives.
Focus On Economic Expansion
During the joint media interaction, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the growing economic relationship between the two countries and noted that investments from Cyprus into India have witnessed significant growth over the last decade.
He stated that investor confidence between the two nations has strengthened steadily, opening fresh opportunities for collaboration in emerging sectors.
Modi also pointed to the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement as a major opportunity that could further boost economic engagement and business partnerships between Indian and Cypriot companies.
According to the Prime Minister, both countries have now set an ambitious target to double Cypriot investments in India once again over the next five years.
He described the upgraded partnership as a reflection of the deep trust and long-term vision shared by New Delhi and Nicosia.
Cooperation In Maritime Security And Infrastructure
A major area of discussion during the talks centred on maritime cooperation and infrastructure connectivity.
Both leaders agreed to intensify collaboration in shipping, port development and maritime security, considering the strategic importance of sea trade routes connecting Europe, West Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.
President Christodoulides announced the formation of a dedicated joint task force that will focus on expanding cooperation in infrastructure projects and the shipping sector.
Officials believe the move could help strengthen trade logistics, improve investment flows and create new opportunities for businesses operating between India and Europe.
India and Cyprus also discussed expanding collaboration in digital infrastructure, financial services and innovation-driven industries.
Shared Concerns On Global Conflicts
The leaders exchanged views on major international developments, including the continuing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace and ending hostilities through dialogue and negotiations.
He stated that India remains committed to supporting peaceful solutions to global conflicts while encouraging stability and cooperation at the international level.
Both sides also agreed on the need for reforms in global institutions to address emerging geopolitical and economic challenges more effectively.
The two countries emphasised that international organisations must adapt to changing global realities to ensure fair representation and efficient decision-making.
Counter-Terrorism And Strategic Coordination
Another important outcome of the discussions was the decision to deepen cooperation in counter-terrorism and regional security.
India and Cyprus agreed to strengthen coordination on intelligence-sharing, maritime monitoring and efforts to combat transnational threats.
Officials indicated that the strategic partnership framework would help both countries improve collaboration on security-related matters while enhancing regional stability.
The talks also reflected growing convergence between India and Cyprus on issues related to international law, sovereignty and global governance reforms.
Cyprus Sees India As Key Economic Partner
President Christodoulides described India as an important global economic power and reaffirmed Cyprus’ interest in expanding long-term cooperation with New Delhi.
He highlighted the growing role of India in global trade and technology and expressed optimism about future partnerships in sectors such as energy, infrastructure and shipping services.
The Cypriot leader began his three-day visit to India on Wednesday and is expected to hold additional engagements aimed at strengthening diplomatic and business ties.
Analysts believe the India-Cyprus strategic partnership represents a broader effort by both nations to deepen economic integration and strengthen cooperation amid evolving geopolitical dynamics across Europe, West Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.
