India, Cyprus Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

New Delhi expands defence, trade and connectivity cooperation with Mediterranean nation

NEW DELHI, May 27: India and Cyprus have upgraded their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, opening a new chapter in defence cooperation, maritime security, trade and technology collaboration between the two countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides held extensive talks in New Delhi, where both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, shipping, connectivity and emerging technologies. The two sides also announced the formation of a joint task force to facilitate investment and strengthen business engagement.

Officials described the agreement as a major diplomatic milestone that reflects India’s growing strategic outreach in the Mediterranean region. The partnership is expected to enhance collaboration in defence manufacturing, cybersecurity, innovation and regional security coordination.

Prime Minister Modi said the new partnership would help both nations move from “cooperation to co-creation” and from “partnership to shared prosperity.” The leaders also exchanged views on conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, reiterating support for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

Analysts believe the strengthening of India-Cyprus relations carries strategic significance amid changing geopolitical dynamics involving Turkey, Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean region. Cyprus is increasingly viewed as an important gateway for India’s economic and strategic engagement with Europe.

The two countries signed several agreements covering education, shipping, digital innovation and infrastructure development. Discussions also focused on increasing tourism flows, investment partnerships and energy cooperation.

Officials noted that Cyprus has shown growing interest in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities, including advanced missile and drone technologies. The talks also included cooperation in maritime domain awareness and counter-terrorism initiatives.

India and Cyprus have shared friendly ties for decades, but the elevation to a strategic partnership marks one of the most significant developments in bilateral relations in recent years. Diplomatic sources said both nations are expected to increase high-level exchanges and defence dialogue in the coming months.

The agreement also reflects India’s broader strategy of expanding influence across Europe and the Mediterranean through economic partnerships and strategic diplomacy.
