India, June 07 : India returned to the summit of South Asian women’s football after defeating Bangladesh 3-1 in the SAFF Women’s Championship final in Margao on June 6. The victory marked India’s sixth championship success and their first title since 2019, ending a seven year wait to regain the regional crown.
The home side produced a composed and attacking display in the title clash, taking control through Pyari Xaxa late in the first half. Bangladesh responded in stoppage time when Ritu Porna Chakma found the net, ensuring the teams headed into the break on level terms.
India wasted little time restoring their advantage after the restart as Sanfida Nongrum struck within minutes of the second half. With Bangladesh pushing forward in search of another equaliser, India remained disciplined and sealed the contest when Lynda Kom Serto added a third goal in the closing stages.
The triumph capped an impressive campaign for the hosts, who remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. India showcased their attacking strength and defensive solidity, registering convincing victories in every phase of the competition and finishing with a remarkable goal tally.
The championship run began with a resounding win over Maldives before another dominant performance against Bangladesh in the group stage secured top spot. Carrying that momentum into the knockout rounds, the Indian squad consistently outperformed their opponents to reach the final.
The latest success also represented redemption for a team that had endured disappointment in the previous two editions. Bangladesh had emerged champions in both 2022 and 2024, while India failed to make the final on those occasions. By lifting the trophy once again, the hosts reasserted their status as one of the strongest forces in South Asian women’s football.
With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent delivering throughout the tournament, India’s title-winning campaign is expected to provide a major boost to the continued growth of women’s football in the country.
