India Faces LPG Supply Challenge Amid Global Disruptions

Government ramps up imports and domestic output to ensure uninterrupted cooking fuel supply

India, Mar 20 : India is grappling with an emerging LPG supply challenge as global disruptions, particularly in the Middle East, begin to impact the steady flow of cooking gas into the country. With a large share of its LPG imports routed through sensitive regions, any disturbance in supply chains has raised concerns over availability.

Officials have stepped up efforts to secure alternative sources, increasing imports from countries such as the United States while also boosting domestic production. Refining units across the country are operating at higher capacity to meet rising demand and prevent shortages.

The situation has been further complicated by disruptions in key maritime routes, which handle a significant portion of global LPG shipments. This has tightened supply in the international market, pushing authorities to diversify sourcing strategies and strengthen logistical planning.

To manage the situation, the government has introduced measures to regulate distribution and discourage hoarding. Priority is being given to household consumption and essential services, ensuring that vulnerable sections are not adversely affected.

Experts note that India’s heavy dependence on imports makes it particularly sensitive to global price and supply fluctuations. While short-term measures may provide relief, long-term strategies such as expanding storage capacity and accelerating the shift to alternative energy sources will be crucial in enhancing energy security.
