India, Sep 20 : India’s Davis Cup campaign ended on a disappointing note as South Korea defeated the Indian team 3-1 in their second-round qualifier in Seoul on September 20.
India’s top ranked singles player Sumit Nagal was unable to overcome Soonwoo Kwon in the first reverse singles match. Kwon secured a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory in just one hour and 18 minutes, giving South Korea an unassailable lead in the tie.
Nagal entered the contest after playing a demanding three-hour and five-minute singles match on Friday. The short recovery period proved challenging as the Indian struggled to match Kwon’s intensity during the decisive encounter.
The defeat brought an end to India’s Davis Cup campaign, while South Korea advanced after taking control of the tie with strong performances in the singles matches.
India’s loss also highlighted the physical demands of playing successive high-pressure matches, particularly in a tie where every result carried significant importance. Kwon took advantage of the situation and maintained control throughout the match.
The 3-1 result means South Korea moves forward in the Davis Cup competition, while India will have to wait for its next opportunity to make progress in the international team event.
