India lauds US role as Gaza peace deal moves into second phase

New initiatives focus on Gaza reconstruction, humanitarian aid, and phased demilitarisation

India, Jan 29 : India has welcomed the launch of the second phase of the Gaza peace deal and commended the United States for its efforts to resolve the conflict. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council debate on the Middle East, India’s Permanent Representative highlighted the importance of sustained international support for the region.

Emphasising a firm stance against terrorism, he said, “Terrorism has no place in civilised societies and must be condemned in all its forms,” indirectly referencing the attacks that triggered the 2023 Gaza crisis.

India acknowledged progress in implementing the Security Council resolution adopted in November, while appreciating US efforts in addressing the longstanding issue. The second phase of the US-backed peace plan includes establishing a transitional technocratic Palestinian administration, initiating full demilitarisation of Hamas and other armed groups, and rebuilding Gaza’s infrastructure.

Highlighting the scale of the reconstruction challenge, India’s representative noted the presence of 60 million tonnes of debris and the need for technologically innovative approaches to address hazardous pollutants. India has actively contributed to humanitarian relief, delivering nearly 135 metric tonnes of medicines and supplies over the past two years, alongside ongoing development projects worth $40 million. In total, India’s support to Palestinians exceeds $170 million.

India also reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution, envisioning an independent Palestine alongside Israel. The creation of a Board of Peace to oversee the phased peace and reconstruction efforts was highlighted as a key aspect of the deal. While invited to join the Board, India has yet to respond, expressing concerns over parallel frameworks operating outside the UN system.

UN and US officials described the second phase as a “critical step” and a “potential turning point” for Gaza, with the US underscoring continued cooperation with Israel, Arab nations, and the global community to bring peace, security, and stability to the region.
