New Delhi, Feb 27 : India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, met with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi to explore ways to deepen bilateral strategic and defence ties, the Indian Army said on Thursday. The discussion also reviewed the evolving security landscape in the region and identified avenues for enhanced defence and diplomatic collaboration.

During the meeting, both sides emphasised the longstanding and close relationship between India and the Maldives, highlighting ongoing cooperation on sustainable development, market reforms, and shared regional challenges.

Maldives Minister of State for Tourism and Environment, Muaviyath Mohamed, noted that India remains a reliable partner in technology transfer, capacity-building, and addressing environmental and development challenges. He added that collaborative efforts with Indian institutions have strengthened over time to meet shared objectives.

The meeting follows recent engagements in maritime security, including a February 18 interaction between Indian Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti and Maldives Coast Guard Commandant Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem. The discussions underscored the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean Region, highlighted interoperability initiatives, and reinforced the nations’ joint commitment to regional maritime security.

India and the Maldives continue to expand their strategic, defence, and diplomatic partnership, building on decades of collaboration to ensure stability and security in the region.
