India Marks Parakram Diwas in Honour of Netaji’s Courage and Legacy

January 23 celebrates India’s iconic freedom fighter whose bravery and vision continue to inspire generations.

New Delhi, Jan 23 : Every year on January 23, India pauses to remember one of its most fearless freedom fighters: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Officially designated as Parakram Diwas or Day of Valour this day celebrates the courage, determination, and unyielding spirit of a leader who refused to bow to injustice.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: A fearless leader
Born on January 23, 1897, Bose became a symbol of bold action in India’s struggle for independence. Unlike leaders who favoured negotiation, he believed freedom could only be won through decisive struggle. As the head of the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) and the founder of the Azad Hind Government, Netaji championed discipline, bravery, and a relentless fight against colonial rule.

The significance of Parakram Diwas
In 2021, the Government of India officially renamed Netaji Jayanti as Parakram Diwas to reflect his extraordinary valor. The day serves as a national reminder of his sacrifices, fearless leadership, and the ideals he stood for.

How the day is observed
Across India, states such as West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tripura, Assam, and Odisha observe the day with public events, government tributes, cultural programs, and speeches celebrating Netaji’s life. Remarkably, just months after his mysterious disappearance, his birthday was commemorated in Rangoon, highlighting the admiration he commanded even beyond India’s borders.

Remembering Netaji through his words
Netaji’s speeches and writings were as fiery as his actions. His words continue to resonate on Parakram Diwas, reminding the nation of the cost of freedom:

“It is blood alone that can pay the price of freedom. Give me blood, and I will give you freedom!”

This day is not only a tribute to Netaji’s bravery but also an inspiration to uphold the values of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice.
