India Records 774 New COVID Cases: Vigilance Continues Amid Variant Concerns

New Delhi, 06-01-2024 : India reported a single-day spike of 774 new COVID-19 cases, according to the latest update from the Union health ministry. The country’s active cases currently stand at 4,187, with two new deaths recorded within 24 hours—one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

The daily COVID-19 cases remained in double digits until December 5 but started rising again, attributed to the cold weather conditions and the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, JN.1. After December 5, the highest single-day rise occurred on December 31, 2023, with 841 cases reported, accounting for 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021.

Of the 4,187 active cases, over 92 per cent are currently under home isolation. Officials have noted that available data suggests the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases, hospitalizations, or mortality.

India has experienced three waves of COVID-19 in the past, with the Delta wave peaking during April-June 2021, reporting 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, the country has seen over 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths.

The recovery rate stands at 98.81 per cent, with more than 4.4 crore individuals having recuperated from the disease. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines as part of its vaccination efforts.
