EAM S. Jaishankar voices deep concern over unfolding situation after US action in Venezuela, stresses peace and well being of Venezuelan people

New Delhi/Luxembourg, Jan 7: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed India’s deep concern over the unfolding situation in Venezuela following recent military actions involving the United States, urging all parties to resolve differences through dialogue and to prioritise the well being and safety of the Venezuelan people.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel on Tuesday, Jaishankar said India was closely watching developments and urged stakeholders to work toward a peaceful outcome. “We would urge all parties to sit down and come to a position of well being and safety of the people of Venezuela, because at the end of the day, that is our concern,” he said.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had issued a statement saying India is monitoring the situation closely and reaffirmed its support for the well being and safety of the people of Venezuela, while calling on all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the region.

The MEA also noted that the Indian Embassy in Caracas remains in constant touch with the Indian community, offering all possible assistance, and had issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela and exercise extreme caution amid the crisis.

The diplomatic message highlights India’s emphasis on stability, safety and dialogue as priority approaches to the evolving situation in the South American country.
