NEW DELHI, Sept 11: India has crossed the milestone of 80 lakh human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to expand preventive healthcare and reduce the risk of HPV-related diseases and cancers, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.
The nationwide vaccination campaign was launched on February 28 with the aim of providing protection to girls aged 14 years. The HPV vaccine is an important preventive measure against cervical cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers affecting women.
Under the programme, the single dose Gardasil-4 vaccine is being provided free of cost at government healthcare facilities. These include Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, primary health centres, community health centres, sub district and district hospitals, as well as government medical colleges.
The ministry said vaccination is carried out in the presence of medical officers, while designated sites are connected with 24×7 adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) management centres to ensure timely medical assistance in case of any complications.
Vaccination is voluntary and requires parental consent. Eligible beneficiaries can register through the U-WIN platform, while trained medical officers are available to address any adverse events associated with immunisation.
States including Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha and Mizoram are among those making significant progress in implementing the campaign, according to the ministry.
Health authorities are working with schools, local bodies and healthcare workers to facilitate access and encourage eligible beneficiaries to participate in the programme.
The ministry has also urged parents and guardians to support eligible girls and ensure they are informed about the availability and benefits of vaccination.
Operational guidelines for implementing the programme have been circulated to all states and Union Territories to support uniform and effective rollout across the country.
