NEW DELHI, May 13: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has intensified its crackdown on unrecognised educational institutions across the country, issuing fresh warnings to students and parents ahead of the 2026 admission cycle.
According to the latest list released by the UGC, 32 institutions operating in different states have been identified as fake universities that are not authorised to award valid degrees. Most of these institutions are concentrated in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, while several others are spread across different regions of the country.
The development has triggered renewed concerns regarding educational fraud, misleading advertisements, and the growing number of students falling victim to unrecognised institutes offering invalid degrees and certificates.
Education authorities said students must carefully verify the recognition status of colleges and universities before applying for admissions. Officials stressed that degrees issued by fake institutions have no legal validity for employment, higher studies, or government recruitment examinations.
The warning comes at a crucial time when thousands of students are preparing for admissions into undergraduate and postgraduate courses following board examination results and entrance tests.
Officials in the higher education sector said the proliferation of fake institutions has become a major challenge due to aggressive online marketing campaigns and misleading promotional material targeting students in smaller towns and rural regions.
Educational experts observed that many students and families are often unable to distinguish between recognised universities and institutions operating without statutory approval. Some fake institutes allegedly use names resembling reputed universities to create confusion during the admission process.
The UGC has urged students to cross-check university details through official portals and accreditation databases before taking admission decisions. Authorities have also advised parents to examine approval status, NAAC accreditation, and statutory permissions carefully.
Discussions around educational regulation have intensified in recent months following debates on higher education reforms and university governance frameworks. Concerns related to transparency, student welfare, and academic quality remain central to policy discussions.
