New Delhi, Aug. 1: India has accelerated its quantum technology ambitions with the launch of new projects under the National Quantum Mission, focusing on advanced computing, secure communication networks, and precision sensing technologies.
The latest initiatives bring together leading research institutions, universities, and industry partners to develop indigenous quantum solutions capable of supporting strategic sectors, including defence, finance, healthcare, and telecommunications.
Officials said the projects will prioritise the development of quantum processors, quantum algorithms, and secure communication systems that can withstand future cyber threats. Investments will also be directed towards building specialised laboratories and expanding access to advanced research infrastructure.
As part of the programme, researchers will receive funding to explore practical applications of quantum technologies in drug discovery, climate modelling, logistics optimisation, and complex data analysis. The government also plans to encourage startups working in the quantum ecosystem through incubation support and collaborative research opportunities.
Technology experts believe the expansion of quantum research will strengthen India’s position in the global race for next-generation computing while reducing reliance on imported technologies. The mission is also expected to create high-skilled employment opportunities and promote innovation across academia and industry.
Officials said the National Quantum Mission remains a long-term strategic initiative aimed at building a self-reliant quantum ecosystem, enabling secure digital infrastructure, and preparing the country for future technological advancements.
