New Delhi, Oct 10: India on Friday announced the elevation of its technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar appreciated the Taliban administration for showing sensitivity to India’s security concerns.
Jaishankar made the announcement during his wide-ranging discussions with visiting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. India had initially withdrawn its officials from Kabul after the Taliban took power in August 2021 but re-established its diplomatic presence in June 2022 through a technical team.
“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” Jaishankar said. He emphasized India’s deep interest in Afghanistan’s development and progress as a contiguous neighbour and long-time partner.
Highlighting ongoing cooperation, Jaishankar said, “We appreciate your sensitivity towards India’s security concerns. Your solidarity with us in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack was noteworthy.” He also stressed the need for both countries to coordinate efforts against cross-border terrorism.
In response, Muttaqi described India as a vital regional partner that has consistently supported the Afghan people and contributed to development projects across the country.
The upgrade of India’s mission in Kabul reflects renewed commitment to bilateral cooperation, regional stability, and a shared vision of growth and prosperity.
