Indian Army : Brigadiers and above rank officers in Indian Army to have uniform standardization

09-05-2023 : The Indian Army has recently announced that starting from August 1, brigadiers and above rank officers will wear a common uniform regardless of their parent cadre and appointment. This decision was reached after thorough discussions during the Army Commanders Conference and consultations with all stakeholders. The changes will apply to the headgear, shoulder rank badges, gorget patches, belts, and shoes of senior officers.

According to sources, the adoption of a standard uniform aims to promote and reinforce a common identity and approach in service matters among senior leadership beyond the boundaries of regimentation. This decision also aims to highlight the Indian Army’s character as a fair and equitable organization.

While colonels and officers below that rank will continue to wear their current uniform, brigadiers and above officers who have already commanded units and battalions and are usually stationed at headquarters or establishments where officers from different arms and services work together will now wear a standard uniform. The adoption of a common uniform will ensure that all senior-rank officers have a common identity while reflecting the true ethos of the Indian Army. It is worth noting that different types of uniforms and accouterments have specific associations with respective arms, regiments, and services in the Indian Army.
