Indian Embassy Issues Advisory for Nationals in Mexico After ‘El Mencho’ Killing

Mission urges citizens in violence-hit states to shelter in place following military operation against cartel chief

Mexico, Feb 23 : The Embassy of India in Mexico on Monday advised Indian nationals to remain cautious and limit movement in parts of Mexico following a surge in violence triggered by the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho.

In a statement posted on X, the mission said security operations, road blockages and criminal activity were ongoing in several regions and urged citizens to shelter in place until further notice.

States Under Alert

The advisory specifically mentioned areas in Jalisco  including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara  as well as parts of Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon.

Nationals were instructed to avoid areas with law enforcement presence, stay away from crowds, monitor local media updates and follow directions issued by authorities. The embassy also recommended keeping family and friends informed about their safety and location, and dialling emergency services (911) if required.

Trigger for Advisory

The alert follows a military operation in the western state of Jalisco on Sunday in which Mexican soldiers killed Oseguera, one of the most wanted figures in Mexico and the United States. His death reportedly sparked unrest and heightened security activity across multiple states.

Indian authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and will issue further guidance as necessary.
