BEIJING, Sep 20: Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami has lauded the work of scholars at Peking University’s Department of Oriental Studies for their contribution to India studies and academic engagement between India and China.
Doraiswami attended the department’s 80th anniversary celebrations on Saturday, where he joined Peking University President Gao Song, Vice President Fang, along with faculty members and scholars.
According to the Indian Embassy in China, the ambassador congratulated the university and members of its Oriental Studies community on the milestone. He also highlighted the institution’s long-standing focus on India studies and acknowledged the contributions made by successive generations of Indian and Chinese academics.
The celebrations underlined the importance of sustained scholarly engagement in developing a deeper understanding between the two countries.
Peking University’s Department of South Asian Studies currently provides instruction in six languages: Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Tibetan.
