WASHINGTON, July 17: A 32 year old Indian national sustained multiple stab wounds in what investigators are treating as an alleged religion motivated attack inside a shopping mall in the US state of Utah. The violent incident has sparked concern among the Indian community and prompted immediate diplomatic outreach from the Consulate General of India in San Francisco.
According to local law enforcement and media reports, the attack occurred on Monday afternoon at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, near Salt Lake City. The victim, identified as Syed Sohailuddin, was working inside one of the mall’s establishments when he was approached by the accused, Peter Michael Larsen.
Authorities said the suspect allegedly initiated a conversation by asking Sohailuddin about his religion before launching a brutal knife attack. Investigators believe the assault was intentional and may have been motivated by religious bias, making it one of the most serious hate crime investigations in the region this year.
