NEW DELHI, June 17: India’s defence manufacturing sector achieved a historic milestone in the financial year 2025-26, with total production reaching an all time high of Rs 1.78 lakh crore, reflecting the country’s accelerating push towards self-reliance in military equipment and strategic technologies.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the latest figure represents a significant 15.6 per cent increase compared to the previous financial year’s output of Rs 1.54 lakh crore. The achievement also highlights the remarkable transformation of the sector over the last five years, with production more than doubling from Rs 84,643 crore recorded in 2020-21.
The sharp rise underscores the success of various government initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities, reducing dependence on imports, and creating a globally competitive defence industrial ecosystem.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the achievement as a reflection of the collective efforts made by the Department of Defence Production, public sector undertakings, private companies, start-ups, and other stakeholders involved in the country’s defence ecosystem.
He said the continuous rise in manufacturing output demonstrates the growing strength of India’s indigenous defence sector and highlights the effectiveness of policy measures introduced to encourage local production.
“The remarkable progress achieved in recent years is a result of coordinated efforts across the defence manufacturing landscape. It reflects the expanding capacity of India’s industrial base and the country’s commitment to achieving greater self-reliance in defence,” Singh said.
The minister further noted that consistent government support, structural reforms, and increasing participation from private industry have played a crucial role in driving growth across multiple segments of the sector.
Over the past several years, the government has implemented a series of measures under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to promote domestic manufacturing. These include positive indigenisation lists, streamlined procurement procedures, enhanced research and development support, and incentives aimed at encouraging innovation within the defence industry.
Industry experts believe that these reforms have helped create new opportunities for Indian companies to develop advanced military platforms, weapons systems, surveillance technologies, and aerospace equipment.
