Iranian Drones Target US Embassy, Baghdad Hotel and Southern Iraq Oilfield

Air Defences Intercept UAVs as Strikes Extend Across Iraq and Gulf Energy Sites

Baghdad/Washington, Mar 17 – Multiple drone attacks targeted key locations in Iraq early Tuesday, including the US Embassy Baghdad, a hotel in the capital, and a major southern oil facility, as regional tensions continue to escalate.

According to reports, Iraqi air defence systems intercepted several unmanned aerial vehicles before they could reach the embassy compound. Security sources indicated that at least four drones were launched toward the diplomatic site, with some debris falling in central Baghdad, including areas near the Green Zone.

A drone also struck the Al-Rasheed Hotel, hitting its upper structure. Iraq’s Interior Ministry confirmed the incident but said there were no casualties or significant damage. Visual evidence circulating online showed explosions near the embassy perimeter and air defence systems engaging incoming projectiles.

In southern Iraq, the Majnoon Oil Field came under attack, raising concerns about disruptions to energy infrastructure. The strikes form part of a broader pattern of escalating hostilities across the region.

Elsewhere, the United Arab Emirates temporarily shut its airspace following fires at oil facilities in Fujairah and the Shah gas field, reportedly triggered by drone strikes. In Saudi Arabia, authorities confirmed intercepting and destroying multiple drones in the eastern region, preventing damage.

The developments come amid intensifying confrontation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with repeated attacks heightening fears of wider instability. Leaders across the Gulf have expressed concern over the security situation, warning of serious implications for regional and global stability.

Separately, a tanker near Fujairah was struck by an unidentified projectile, sustaining minor damage without casualties or environmental impact, according to maritime authorities. Investigations are underway, and vessels in the area have been advised to exercise caution.

The latest incidents underscore growing risks to critical infrastructure and shipping routes, particularly around strategic energy corridors, as geopolitical tensions continue to intensify.
