DUBAI, Apr 9: Israel on Thursday announced that it had carried out a targeted strike in Beirut, claiming to have killed a close relative of Hezbollah’s top leadership. According to the Israeli military, the operation eliminated Ali Yusuf Harshi, identified as both the nephew and personal secretary of Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strike was conducted overnight in the Beirut area, describing it as a precision mission aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s command structure. Officials asserted that Harshi played a significant role within the organization due to his proximity to Naim Qassem, making him a key figure in operational coordination.
The development marks another escalation in the long-running tensions between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. While Israel has intensified its operations targeting Hezbollah-linked assets and individuals, the group has repeatedly vowed retaliation against such strikes.
There has been no immediate confirmation or response from Hezbollah regarding the reported killing. However, past incidents suggest that such targeted actions often trigger heightened security alerts and raise fears of broader regional confrontation.
The strike in Beirut underscores the fragile security situation in Lebanon, particularly as cross-border hostilities and geopolitical rivalries continue to shape developments in the Middle East. Observers warn that continued targeted attacks on senior figures or their close associates could further inflame tensions and complicate diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
