New Delhi, Oct 14 : Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remaining silent on US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of using tariffs to influence India-Pakistan tensions. Ramesh noted that this marks the 51st time Trump has made such assertions.
“President Trump has stated multiple times across America, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan occurred because of his tariff threats, claiming that international trade would benefit if the ceasefire was achieved,” Ramesh said in a post on X. “Our Prime Minister does not want to hear about tariffs; he only wants to hear praise. Hence, the PM remains silent.”
Trump recently claimed that he used tariffs as leverage to resolve several international conflicts, including potential confrontations between India and Pakistan, saying, “If you guys want to fight a war and you have nuclear weapons, I am going to impose tariffs of 100 percent, 150 percent, or 200 percent…”
Ramesh further questioned the silence of India’s top leadership, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, stating, “Our foreign minister is silent on this, and our Prime Minister is completely silent.”
