MOSCOW, Aug 25: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held extensive discussions on Tuesday, reviewing bilateral relations along with major regional and international developments.
The talks covered cooperation between India and Russia, global challenges and issues concerning multilateral forums. The situation in Ukraine, Iran and Afghanistan also featured in the discussions, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency, which cited the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Jaishankar said on X that he had held a wide-ranging conversation with Lavrov and discussed bilateral cooperation, regional hotspots, global challenges and multilateral matters.
The Indian minister arrived in Moscow on Sunday for a two-day visit, which comes ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected trip to New Delhi for the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13.
According to TASS, the two sides exchanged views on key developments on the international agenda and coordinated their positions on Afghanistan, Iran and Ukraine.
The ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination through international and multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS and the Group of Twenty.
Both sides agreed to further strengthen trust-based engagement at various levels, reflecting the continued importance attached to the India-Russia partnership.
Jaishankar’s visit also carries significance amid efforts by New Delhi and Moscow to expand economic cooperation and strengthen ties across several strategic sectors.
On Monday, Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin, with discussions focusing on strengthening economic relations. Key areas included trade, energy, fertilisers and civil nuclear cooperation.
The External Affairs Minister also co-chaired a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
The latest diplomatic engagement underscores efforts by both countries to maintain momentum in their longstanding partnership while coordinating on major regional and global developments.
