Luxembourg, Jan 7: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday took a pointed stance on what he described as Western double standards in responding to conflicts, recalling reactions during India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025. Speaking to the Indian diaspora in Luxembourg City, Jaishankar emphasized that international advice is often inconsistent and shaped more by distance and self-interest than genuine concern.
“People sitting far away will say things, sometimes thoughtfully, sometimes carelessly, sometimes with self interest. That will happen,” Jaishankar said. “What they say is not what they do, and we have to accept it in that spirit.”
The minister noted that countries frequently offer “free advice” on tensions elsewhere while overlooking instability in their own regions. Recounting Operation Sindoor, he said India received many such cautions but proceeded pragmatically, prioritizing national interests.
Jaishankar added that India distinguishes between partners willing to cooperate positively and actors, like Pakistan, whose actions require a different approach.
Beyond geopolitics, Jaishankar’s discussions in Luxembourg also touched on strengthening political, business, and technology ties, acknowledging the contributions of the Indian diaspora in deepening bilateral relations. In a post on X, he wrote:
“Glad to interact with members of Indian community in Luxembourg today. Underlined the significant deepening of our partnership with Luxembourg across political, business and technology domains. Appreciate the contributions of our diaspora in deepening India Luxembourg ties.”
