NEW DELHI, July 11: Jamia Millia Islamia has introduced a significant academic reform by revising its examination regulations, offering final year students greater flexibility in completing their degrees. The updated policy enables eligible students with pending papers from previous semesters or academic years to appear in a special compartment examination immediately after their final examinations, eliminating the need to wait for the next regular examination cycle.
The reform was approved by the university’s Executive Council through amendments to Ordinance-15, marking an important step towards reducing delays in graduation and improving academic progression for students facing backlog issues.
Under the revised regulations, students enrolled in the final semester or final year of programmes following the annual examination system can now attempt backlog subjects through a compartment examination conducted after the completion of their final semester or annual examinations. This measure is expected to help students complete their academic requirements within the same academic year, thereby avoiding prolonged delays in receiving their degrees.
University authorities stated that the detailed schedule for the compartment examinations will be announced separately by the Office of the Controller of Examinations. Students are advised to keep track of official notifications regarding application procedures, examination dates, and other related guidelines.
The newly introduced facility is applicable only to students studying in regular academic programmes offered by Jamia Millia Islamia. Learners enrolled through the university’s distance education mode will continue to follow the existing examination framework and will not be covered under the revised provision.
The amendment also updates Clause 24.4 of Ordinance-15, clarifying the university’s position on courses operating under the carry-over system. While compartment examinations will generally not be conducted for such programmes, an exception has been created for students in their final semester or final year, allowing them to clear outstanding papers from any previous semester or academic year before completing their studies.
In another important decision, the Executive Council has modified the rules governing re-evaluation of answer scripts. As per the revised Clause 23.1, final-year students will now have the option of appearing directly in the compartment examination instead of submitting their papers for re-evaluation. The change offers students an alternative route to improve their academic standing without waiting for the outcome of the re-evaluation process.
The existing re-evaluation system will continue for students in earlier years of their programmes. They may apply for re-evaluation of answer scripts within 15 days from the declaration of examination results, following the university’s established procedures.
Education experts believe the revised examination framework reflects a student-centric approach by providing additional opportunities to complete academic requirements in a shorter time. The policy is also expected to benefit graduates seeking higher education admissions or employment opportunities, as it reduces delays caused by unresolved backlog papers.
With these amendments, Jamia Millia Islamia aims to make its examination system more flexible while maintaining academic standards, ensuring deserving students can complete their degrees in a timely and efficient manner.
