26-09-2023 : The government of Jammu & Kashmir has taken a significant step by removing a councilor associated with the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on the grounds of alleged misuse of her official powers. The decision to remove Jyoti Devi, who held the position of councilor within the Jammu Municipal Corporation, stems from a troubling incident. She was reportedly apprehended by the vigilant investigators of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while allegedly accepting a bribe amounting to Rs 1000. Such allegations of corruption and abuse of power in public office are viewed with utmost seriousness by the authorities.
To address this grave matter, the Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD) has invoked its authority under section 34(I) (b) of The Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, 2000. According to the government’s official order, issued with immediate effect, it states, “Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 34(I) (b) of The Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, the government hereby removes Smt. Jyoti, councillor, ward No 53, from her office on the ground of abuse of her official powers.”
