‘Jana Nayagan’ Vijay UK Censor Clearance, Indian CBFC Legal Review Delays Release

British Board of Film Classification certifies film for 15+, while Indian release faces legal and certification hurdles

Chennai / Jan 7: Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming blockbuster ‘Jana Nayagan’ was set to release worldwide on January 9, but the film’s domestic release in India is now delayed due to pending review by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

While fans abroad can enjoy the film thanks to a ‘15’ certificate from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) restricting viewing to audiences aged 15 and above, with warnings for strong language, violence, sexual content, and drug use the situation at home is more complex.

In India, ‘Jana Nayagan’ initially received a UA 16+ rating on December 29, 2025, due to gory scenes. However, a complaint filed on January 5 prompted the CBFC Revision Committee to reassess the film, slowing down certification. The next hearing is scheduled for January 7 at the Madras High Court, where the CBFC is reviewing the complaint under Rule 24 of the Cinematograph Certification Rules, which addresses concerns related to religious sentiments or depictions of the armed forces.

The producers are urging expedited approval, highlighting that the film will release on 5,000 screens across India and that delays could lead to piracy issues and substantial financial losses, with over ₹500 crore riding on the release. The movie had already faced delays from its initial October release date.

Fans and industry watchers await the court and CBFC decisions, as Vijay’s highly anticipated action-packed drama continues to face a final hurdle before hitting Indian screens.
