Jerusalem, July 24: Israeli police have arrested a 31 year old man in connection with the suspected murder of an Indian national whose body was discovered inside an apartment in Jerusalem’s Katamon neighbourhood. The incident has prompted a full-scale criminal investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to police officials, the victim, a 40-year-old Indian migrant worker, was found dead on Thursday after officers responded to a report from the residential area. When police entered the apartment, they found the man lying on the floor with visible injuries and a significant amount of blood at the scene, indicating possible foul play.
Officers from the Moria Police Station, accompanied by forensic investigators, immediately secured the apartment and began collecting evidence. Preliminary findings suggest that the death is being treated as a suspected criminal offence.
During the initial investigation, police identified a 31-year-old Israeli resident of Eilat as a suspect. He was taken into custody shortly after being located and is currently being questioned regarding his alleged involvement in the case. Authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s identity as investigations continue.
The identity of the deceased Indian national has also not been made public, pending official procedures and notification of his family.
Senior police officials, including Jerusalem District Commander Avshalom Peled, visited the crime scene to review the progress of the investigation. Following an on-site assessment, Peled directed that the inquiry be transferred to the Jerusalem District’s Central Investigations Unit (YAMAR), which handles serious criminal cases.
Police officials said investigators are examining forensic evidence, witness statements and other material collected from the apartment to establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death.
In a statement released by the Israel Police, Chief Superintendent Yuval Reuven, Commander of the Moria Police Station, confirmed that officers responded swiftly after receiving information about a person found inside a residence under suspicious circumstances.
He said police immediately sealed off the area, initiated forensic examinations and launched an intensive investigation. Based on the evidence gathered during the early stages of the probe, investigators identified and arrested a suspect believed to be connected to the incident.
Reuven added that further investigative procedures are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the case and establish the facts surrounding the alleged murder.
The incident has drawn attention to the safety of foreign workers living in Israel. Thousands of Indian nationals are employed across the country in sectors including construction, healthcare and agriculture, contributing significantly to Israel’s workforce.
Israeli police have assured that the investigation is being treated with priority and that all available resources are being deployed to uncover the motive behind the crime.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether additional arrests are expected or if any charges have been formally filed against the detained suspect. Further updates are likely as investigators complete forensic analysis and continue questioning those connected to the case.
