J&K: A GROWING TOURIST DESTINATION

Editorial

Jammu and Kashmir, one of the most scenic and culturally rich regions in India, has been promoting tourism for many years. In recent years, there has been a renewed focus on promoting religious and nature tourism in the region. This has been done by developing new destinations, improving infrastructure, and promoting adventure tourism. Jammu and Kashmir is also becoming a hotspot for investment in the tourism sector due to the government’s commitment to developing the industry. Despite its security concerns, it has continued to attract a significant number of tourists. J&K UT is a popular destination for religious tourism due to its numerous shrines and holy places and gardens. The UT has a rich history and cultural heritage, and the people are known for their warm hospitality. Religious tourism has been an integral part of the tourism sector in the region, and efforts are underway to promote it further.

One of the key initiatives taken by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to promote religious tourism is the Mansar rejuvenation plan. This plan aims to promote the fusion of religious and nature tourism by developing the Mansar Lake area, which is considered a sacred site by Hindus. The Mansar Lake is surrounded by beautiful hills, and the area is known for its natural beauty. The government is developing the area by building infrastructure such as walkways, boating facilities, and other amenities to make it more attractive to tourists. The Shri Shivkhori Shrine Board was also established to improve the area’s infrastructure and encourage religious travel. An enormous number of pilgrims visit the Shivkhori Cave Temple each year because it is a well-liked pilgrimage destination. The board is striving to upgrade the site’s amenities and increase accessibility for visitors. Jammu and Kashmir is a well-liked location for environmental tourism in addition to religious tourism.  The UT is blessed with beautiful landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, serene lakes, and lush green forests. The government is taking several measures to promote nature tourism in the region.

The government has proposed the development of 75 new destinations, 75 religious sites, 75 cultural and heritage sites, and 75 new tracks to open up new economic avenues and fulfil the aspirations of the people. The development of water parks and cultural centres in various locations is expected to boost employment and entrepreneurship. The Mansar rejuvenation plan and the development of the Tawi Riverfront, Artificial Lake, and Jammu Zoo are some of the projects that are expected to boost nature tourism in the region. In addition to promoting religious and nature tourism, Jammu and Kashmir is also a hotspot for investment in the tourism sector. The government has made a number of efforts to draw investment to the area, including granting tax incentives to tourism-related enterprises and promoting the area as a secure travel destination. In order to modernise and make Jammu and Kashmir into cutting-edge tourist destinations, the government has set aside Rs 447 crore for the tourism industry this year. There are several planned tourism initiatives, including the increase of caravan tourism, which is anticipated to accelerate tourism development in the area.   The Basohli-Bani Tourism Development Authority is working on several projects, including the construction of tourist facilities and the promotion of adventure tourism. The government has also completed the Jammu Ropeway Project, and work is on for the Tawi Riverfront, Artificial Lake, and Jammu Zoo.

At the same time, the government is focusing on restoring and renovating historical forts and palaces to promote cultural tourism in the region. Samba Fort, Hari Parbat, and General Zorawar Singh Palace are some of the historical sites that are being restored and renovated. Jammu and Kashmir is also promoting yoga tourism with the Mantalai Yoga Center. The facility includes a tourist facilitation center, a yoga and meditation complex, a wellness spa and Ayurveda complex, eco-huts with solariums, an open-air amphitheatre, and a helipad.

As such, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has done an excellent job in promoting the region as a tourist destination and boosting the economy and development of tourism. The development of infrastructure, promotion of religious and nature tourism, and implementation of policies to attract domestic and international tourists are all steps in the right direction. The government’s commitment to providing all necessary infrastructure and resources, people-focused, inclusive, and sustainable development policies, and participatory governance approach are all factors that have contributed to the success of the tourism industry in the region. The government’s efforts to create a better future for generations to come are truly remarkable, and the region is now a hotspot for investment in the tourism sector.
