Jammu, April 28: In a solemn and resolute move, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution expressing profound grief, outrage, and solidarity in the wake of the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians, most of them tourists from different parts of the country.
The special session of the Assembly, which commenced with a two-minute silence to pay homage to the victims, saw Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary moving the resolution. The House, united in its sentiment, unequivocally condemned the inhumane and cowardly act of terror, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to safeguard communal harmony, national unity, and the spirit of Kashmiriyat.
“The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly expresses its deepest shock and sorrow over the heinous attack on innocent civilians at Pahalgam on April 22. Such acts are a direct assault on the spirit of Kashmiriyat, the constitutional ethos, and the values of peace, brotherhood, and communal harmony that have long defined our society,” Choudhary said while presenting the resolution.
The resolution paid rich tributes to Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a brave pony ride operator who sacrificed his life while heroically attempting to protect the tourists during the attack. His selflessness and courage, it noted, would continue to inspire generations to come as a shining example of true Kashmiri spirit.
Commending the extraordinary resilience and unity displayed by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the tragedy, the Assembly lauded the peaceful demonstrations and spontaneous moral and material support extended towards the victims. “Such acts of solidarity reaffirm our commitment to peace, rule of law, and our collective humanity,” the resolution stated.
The Assembly also expressed its full endorsement of the diplomatic and security measures announced by the Centre following an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. Emphasizing the need for unity, the House urged all sections of society, particularly the media, to exercise utmost responsibility and avoid actions that could inflame passions or further the divisive aims of the perpetrators.
Highlighting the sinister intent behind the selective targeting of civilians, the resolution made a fervent appeal to political parties, religious leaders, community organizations, youth groups, and media outlets across India to reject violence, divisive rhetoric, and polarization. Instead, it called for collective efforts to uphold constitutional values and national unity.
Furthermore, the Assembly made a heartfelt appeal to all states and Union territories to ensure the protection, dignity, and well-being of Kashmiri citizens, including students and travelers, and to prevent any acts of harassment or discrimination.
“A unified response rooted in peace, compassion, and the rule of law is the most potent answer to those who seek to sow discord,” the resolution emphasized.
A detailed debate is currently underway in the House, with members actively participating in the discussions before the formal adoption of the resolution.
