Kargil, Feb 13: Senior politician and former Food Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon passed away on Friday, drawing condolences from leaders across Jammu and Kashmir and prompting tributes in the Legislative Assembly.
The news was conveyed to the House by Tanveer Sadiq, after which lawmakers observed solemn moments and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a veteran public figure.
Hailing from Sangra village in Kargil, the former minister was widely recognised for representing the interests of people from remote and high altitude regions. Over the years, he built a reputation for administrative experience, accessibility, and a strong connection with grassroots communities.
During his political career, he handled key responsibilities, including the Food portfolio, and emerged as an influential voice for the Ladakh region in multiple political phases of the erstwhile state. Legislators cutting across party lines credited him with consistently advocating public welfare and reinforcing democratic processes.
Speakers in the Assembly described him as a dedicated leader committed to addressing local concerns while remaining closely engaged with the electorate. Condolences were extended to his family as members collectively honoured his contributions.
