J&K Education Minister Sakina Itoo Clarifies No TET Order Issued

Government reviews Teachers Eligibility Test directive before enforcement in the Union Territory

Srinagar, Feb 25: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Wednesday clarified that no new government order has been issued regarding the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) and that there is no immediate plan to enforce it in the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters, Itoo said the government is studying how the Supreme Court mandated TET directive is being implemented in other states and UTs before taking any action in J&K.

“The idea of eligibility tests is not new. It was first envisioned during the tenure of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, with steps initiated through the RET examination framework by former Education Minister Naeem Akhtar,” Itoo explained.

She stressed that rushing implementation would be unfair to teachers in J&K, many of whom have served for 25 to 35 years and contributed significantly to educating generations of students now working as doctors, engineers, IAS and KAS officers, and academics.

The Minister noted that the Supreme Court has provided a two-year window for TET enforcement and emphasized that J&K will only review the matter once the directive is uniformly applied across India.

Addressing social media reports, Itoo reiterated that no government order has been issued for immediate TET implementation and that any decision will be carefully considered with respect to ground realities.
