J&K Govt Announces Ex-Gratia Relief of Rs 10 Lakh for Victims’ Families Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

SRINAGAR, April 23:  In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 innocent people, most of them tourists, the Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday announced a comprehensive relief package to support the victims and their families.

Expressing profound grief over the tragedy, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, while those who suffered serious injuries will receive a financial assistance of ₹2 lakh. Victims with minor injuries will be extended support of ₹1 lakh.

In a post shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said, “Deeply shocked and anguished by the despicable terrorist attack in Pahalgam. This barbaric and senseless act of brutality against innocent civilians has no place in any civilised society. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms. We mourn the precious lives lost.”

Reiterating that no financial support can ever truly compensate for the irreparable loss of loved ones, Abdullah emphasized that this measure reflects the government’s solidarity and support in this hour of grief. He added that all arrangements are being made to ensure the dignified transportation of the mortal remains of the deceased to their respective hometowns.

The Chief Minister further informed that the injured are being provided with the best possible medical treatment, and that government agencies are working round the clock to assist families in every way possible.

The horrific attack occurred on Tuesday at the Baisaran meadows near the Pahalgam resort in Anantnag district, leaving not only locals but also two foreign nationals—one from the UAE and one from Nepal—among the dead. The shocking incident has triggered an outpouring of grief and condemnation across the country.

“Terror will never break our resolve. We will not rest until those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” Abdullah affirmed, vowing a swift and uncompromising crackdown on those behind the atrocity.

The government has also assured that security arrangements are being reviewed and strengthened, especially in tourist zones and vulnerable areas, to prevent any recurrence and to restore confidence among visitors and residents alike.
