JAMMU, June 10: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has constituted district-level committees to oversee the functioning of hostels across the Union Territory and ensure adherence to prescribed standards related to safety, hygiene and overall welfare of residents.
As per an order issued by the General Administration Department, the inspection bodies will operate in every district under the leadership of the Additional District Development Commissioner. Other members include officials from the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Social Welfare Department, Rural Development Department and the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department.
The newly formed committees have been entrusted with conducting periodic reviews of hostel facilities and services. Their mandate covers assessment of food quality, cleanliness, health and sanitation measures, accommodation conditions, availability of safe drinking water and proper waste management systems.
In addition, the panels will examine the condition of infrastructure, maintenance of official records and utilization of funds allocated for hostel operations. The inspections are aimed at identifying shortcomings and ensuring that facilities provide a safe and supportive environment for inmates.
Authorities said the committees will also suggest corrective measures and improvements wherever necessary to strengthen management practices and enhance the well-being of residents staying in hostels.
To ensure continuous monitoring, the inspection teams have been directed to carry out visits every month and submit detailed reports to the respective Deputy Commissioners. The findings will be reviewed by the concerned departments for appropriate follow-up action and implementation of recommendations.
The initiative is expected to bring greater accountability and transparency in the functioning of hostels while improving service delivery and living standards for residents across Jammu and Kashmir.
