Srinagar, 10-01-2024 : Panchayat and municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir are unlikely to be conducted before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due to the pending amendment of the law to extend reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local bodies, according to a senior official. Although the Administrative Council, led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, has decided to extend reservation benefits to OBCs in panchayats and municipal bodies, the Centre needs to either pass an ordinance or introduce a bill in Parliament for the amendment. State Election Commissioner B R Sharma stated that holding panchayat polls before the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir is “extremely unlikely” and emphasized the need to determine the quantum of reservation in addition to amending the act.
