J&K Polls: Mallikarjun Kharge Calls for High Voter Turnout to Restore Constitutional Rights

"Your Vote Can Change Your Destiny": Kharge’s Powerful Appeal to Jammu and Kashmir Voters

NEW DELHI, Oct 1: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, on Tuesday, made a strong appeal to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, urging them to participate in large numbers during the third and final phase of the assembly elections in the union territory. He called upon voters to “teach a lesson” to those responsible for stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its statehood.

In his address via a post on X, Kharge emphasized the importance of the electoral process, particularly in the 40 assembly constituencies where voting is underway. These districts, including the winter capital Jammu, play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s future, with over 39.18 lakh eligible voters set to decide the fate of 415 candidates.

“As the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir elections begins, I appeal to the people in these 40 assembly seats to exercise their democratic rights in large numbers,” Kharge urged, stressing that this is a critical opportunity to hold accountable those who deprived the region of its statehood.

Highlighting the significance of every vote, Kharge remarked, “A single vote can change your destiny and pave the way for a brighter future that guarantees your constitutional rights.” He further added, “Your vote is essential in ensuring better employment opportunities for the youth, addressing corruption, protecting land rights, and fostering progress and prosperity.”

Welcoming first-time voters, Kharge expressed optimism about their role in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir. He reiterated the need for robust voter turnout, encouraging all eligible individuals to join the queues and exercise their rights.

Voting commenced at 7 a.m. across 16 assembly segments in the border districts of Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora in north Kashmir, with 202 candidates contesting in these areas. Simultaneously, elections are taking place in 24 assembly constituencies in Udhampur, Samba, and Kathua districts in the Jammu region.

The earlier phases of the elections saw significant voter turnout, with 61.38% in the first phase and 57.31% in the second phase. The election results are set to be announced on October 8.
