J&K Strengthens Healthcare Network with New Specialist Recruitment Drive Across Government Hospitals

Health Department launches fresh recruitment initiative to address specialist shortages, improve patient care and strengthen medical services in district hospitals.

JAMMU, June 27: In a major step aimed at improving healthcare delivery across Jammu and Kashmir, the Health and Medical Education Department has initiated a comprehensive recruitment drive for specialist doctors to strengthen government hospitals and reduce the shortage of medical professionals in underserved areas.

The initiative is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services in district hospitals, sub-district hospitals and community health centres where patients often face delays due to a lack of specialists. Officials said the recruitment focuses on critical departments including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, anaesthesia, radiology and orthopaedics.

The Health Department has been working on expanding healthcare infrastructure over the past few years by upgrading hospitals with modern diagnostic equipment and improving emergency care facilities. However, authorities acknowledged that increasing the availability of qualified specialists remains equally important to ensure quality treatment for patients across urban and rural regions.

Officials stated that appointments will be made through a transparent selection process in accordance with existing recruitment rules. Priority will be given to institutions experiencing the highest patient load and acute manpower shortages.

Healthcare experts welcomed the initiative, noting that specialist vacancies have been a long-standing challenge affecting timely diagnosis and advanced treatment. Many patients currently travel to tertiary hospitals in Jammu and Srinagar even for conditions that could be managed locally if specialist services were available.

The recruitment drive is also expected to reduce the referral burden on major medical institutions by enabling district hospitals to handle more complex medical cases. This will help improve patient outcomes while reducing travel expenses and waiting time for treatment.

Authorities said strengthening human resources is a key component of the government’s broader healthcare reform strategy, which includes modernisation of hospitals, expansion of critical care units and digital health services.

Medical administrators believe that filling vacant specialist positions will also improve emergency response, maternal healthcare, surgical services and intensive care management throughout the Union Territory.

The Health Department reiterated its commitment to ensuring equitable healthcare access and said additional recruitment measures will continue in phases depending on institutional requirements and service demands.
