548 new medical seats to boost healthcare training across the Union Territory

Jammu, Feb 6: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday announced a significant expansion in medical education while presenting the 2026-27 budget in the Legislative Assembly. The government aims to strengthen the healthcare sector and provide more opportunities for aspiring doctors in the region.

“This year, we are adding 548 medical seats to enhance educational capacity,” Abdullah said. The expansion includes 340 new MBBS seats, 128 postgraduate seats, 34 postgraduate Ayurveda seats, and 46 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats.

In addition to increasing medical seats, the Chief Minister confirmed that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kashmir is expected to become fully operational by June 2026, marking a major step forward in improving healthcare infrastructure and services in the Union Territory.
