J&K to Elect Members to Rajya Sabha, Polls for Four Seats Scheduled on October 24

Biennial polls to restore representation after UT formation; counting to follow on the same day

New Delhi, Sep 24: The Election Commission on Wednesday announced that biennial elections to fill four vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir will be held on October 24, 2025. These seats have remained unfilled since 2021 due to the absence of a sufficient electorate at the time of the vacancies.

Following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir (with legislature) and Ladakh (without legislature), the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act provides that four sitting Rajya Sabha members representing the former state will now be deemed elected to represent the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

With the formation of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, the required electorate is now in place to conduct these biennial elections. The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on the evening of October 24, shortly after the conclusion of polling.
