Kashmir’s 40-Day Chillai Kalan Concludes; Snowfall Draws Tourists to Gulmarg and Sonamarg

Srinagar, Jan 29: Kashmir recorded a sharp drop in temperatures on Thursday as the 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ nears its end on January 30. The ski resort of Gulmarg experienced a minimum of minus 9°C, while Srinagar and Pahalgam recorded minus 0.6°C and minus 4.5°C, respectively. Jammu city saw 7.2°C, Katra 6.4°C, Batote 0.9°C, Banihal minus 2.6°C, and Bhaderwah minus 3.4°C.

According to the Meteorological Department, dry and cloudy conditions are expected until the evening of January 31, followed by generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain or snow across scattered regions on February 1 and 2. Dry weather is likely to prevail from February 3 to 6.

Authorities in Ganderbal, Bandipora, and Kupwara have issued high avalanche warnings for higher-altitude areas, urging residents to exercise extreme caution. The advisory comes after an avalanche in Sonamarg on Tuesday, which, fortunately, caused no casualties or property damage.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway has reopened for two-way traffic, with travelers advised to maintain lane discipline. However, the Srinagar-Leh route and Mughal Road remain blocked due to heavy snowfall at Zojila Pass and Pir Ki Gali. Sinthan Pass to Kishtwar and Razdan Pass to Gurez Valley also continue to be closed. Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport resumed on Wednesday.

The conclusion of Chillai Kalan has brought fresh snow to the higher reaches and rain to the plains of Jammu, while Srinagar and other major towns recently received their first snowfall of the season. The winter charm has drawn tourists in large numbers, with hotels in Gulmarg reporting full occupancy and Sonamarg about 70% booked.
