New Delhi, Nov 24: Justice Surya Kant, known for his role in several landmark Supreme Court judgments, including the verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 took oath on Monday as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He succeeds Justice B. R. Gavai.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Justice Kant took the oath in Hindi in the name of God.
Appointed as the next Chief Justice on October 30, Justice Kant will serve a tenure of nearly 15 months, demitting office on February 9, 2027, upon reaching the age of 65.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and several senior leaders and dignitaries.
