NEW DELHI, Sept 1: Janata Dal (United) spokesperson K.C. Tyagi, known for his often outspoken views that highlighted tensions between his party and its ally BJP, has stepped down from his position. The JD(U) made the announcement on Sunday, stating that Tyagi’s resignation was due to “personal reasons.” Following his departure, the party’s president and Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, appointed Rajiv Ranjan Prasad as the new national spokesperson for the JD(U).
Although Tyagi cited personal reasons for his resignation, insiders suggest that his frequent and candid comments on sensitive issues, such as the Uniform Civil Code, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, and the government’s stance on the Palestine issue, were causing friction within the party. His positions often created unease among BJP leaders and were perceived as unhelpful to the alliance between JD(U) and BJP.
Tyagi, who is based in Delhi and has long enjoyed a prominent media profile due to his experience and articulate nature, has been a significant voice for the JD(U) on national issues. However, with the presence of other senior JD(U) leaders like Union Minister Lalan Singh and parliamentary party leader Sanjay Jha in Delhi, there was a growing sentiment within the party that these leaders should manage the BJP-JD(U) relationship without the frequent public interventions from Tyagi.
This move comes amid reports that the BJP has been actively reaching out to its allies in an effort to strengthen coordination and unity within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), particularly as the ruling coalition seeks to mitigate any perceptions of discord ahead of future electoral challenges.
