Kalsotra Urges Law Minister for Appointment of SC Judges in Jammu & Kashmir High Court

Jammu, 22 January 2025: R.K. Kalsotra, State President of the All India Confederation of SC/ST/OBC Organisations (J&K), returned to Jammu after meeting Hon’ble Union Law Minister Sh. Arjun Ram Meghwal in New Delhi.

Kalsotra expressed his gratitude to Meghwal for granting them an audience and for acknowledging the memorandum they had presented to the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir on 30 October 2024. A copy of the memorandum had also been forwarded to Meghwal, urging the appointment of Scheduled Caste candidates as High Court judges. Notably, no Scheduled Caste candidate has held this position since the High Court’s inception in 1928.

During the meeting, Kalsotra highlighted the community’s satisfaction with Meghwal’s efforts in communicating with the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir to expedite proposals for filling vacant judicial posts. He emphasized the importance of ensuring adequate representation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and Women in the appointment of High Court judges.

Kalsotra requested the Hon’ble Law Minister to prioritize the process so that candidates from these underrepresented groups could finally be appointed as judges in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir.

In response, Union Law Minister Meghwal assured Kalsotra of prompt and appropriate redressal of these genuine concerns.

Kalsotra was accompanied by Tara Chand Bhagat, Rakesh Kumar, and Er. Lakshay Manyal during the meeting.
