Kalyani Priyadarshan Prepares for Bollywood Debut With Ranveer Singh-Starrer ‘Pralay’

The Malayalam actor has moved to Mumbai and is undergoing action training and rehearsals ahead of the next filming schedule for the zombie thriller.

Mumbai, October 1 : Malayalam actor Kalyani Priyadarshan is preparing for her Bollywood debut with Pralay, an upcoming zombie thriller starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Jai Mehta.

As part of her preparation for the project, Kalyani has relocated to Mumbai, where she is undergoing action training and participating in script readings and rehearsals with the cast. The next phase of filming is scheduled to continue in October.

The move marks an important step in Kalyani’s transition into Hindi cinema after establishing herself through projects in South Indian films. Her upcoming role requires her to participate in a physically demanding production, prompting an intensive preparation programme before cameras return to the sets.

Pralay is being presented as a zombie thriller and features Ranveer Singh in the lead. Jai Mehta, known for his work in crime and drama projects, is directing the film.

The production is expected to combine survival elements, action sequences and a large-scale threat, placing significant physical demands on the performers. Kalyani’s training is therefore part of the broader preparation for the film’s action-oriented sequences.

According to reports, the actor has rented an apartment in Mumbai as she prepares for the project. Her schedule includes action training, rehearsals and script sessions, giving her an opportunity to familiarise herself with the character and the film’s broader narrative before filming resumes.

The upcoming project represents Kalyani’s entry into mainstream Hindi cinema. Before this, she had built her career largely through Malayalam and other South Indian productions, working across different genres and collaborating with prominent filmmakers and actors.

Her Bollywood debut also comes with the advantage of working alongside Ranveer Singh, one of Hindi cinema’s prominent performers. The pairing has generated interest because the project moves both actors into a genre that combines horror, survival and action.

Zombie stories have traditionally occupied a smaller space in mainstream Indian cinema compared with romantic dramas, family entertainers and conventional action films. Pralay is therefore being positioned as a genre-driven Hindi production.

For Kalyani, the preparation process goes beyond learning dialogue and understanding the character. Action-heavy films often require performers to become comfortable with movement, choreography and physically demanding sequences before shooting begins.

Her reported special diet and training schedule are part of this preparation. The actor has also been involved in readings and rehearsals with Singh, helping the principal cast establish their on-screen dynamic before the production moves into its next phase.

The October filming schedule will take the project into another stage of production. Details about the full storyline and Kalyani’s character have remained limited, keeping much of the narrative under wraps.

The film is being directed by Jai Mehta, whose earlier work has included projects built around crime, social conflict and complex characters. His involvement in a zombie thriller represents a move into a different genre while retaining an emphasis on narrative and character.

Kalyani’s entry into Hindi cinema also reflects the increasingly fluid movement of actors between India’s regional film industries. Performers from Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema have increasingly taken on projects across language markets, while Hindi productions have also expanded their casting choices.

For audiences familiar with Kalyani’s earlier work, Pralay offers an opportunity to see her in a new setting and genre. The film is expected to demand a different performance style from the actor because of its action and survival elements.

The project also gives her an opportunity to work on a large Hindi-language production from the beginning of its promotional and theatrical cycle. Her relocation to Mumbai indicates that the commitment extends beyond the filming schedule itself.

While the exact release date and several plot details remain closely guarded, production preparations are already underway. The continuation of filming in October is expected to advance the project further.

The collaboration between Kalyani, Ranveer and Mehta has consequently become one of the developments being followed in the Hindi film industry as the project progresses.

The actor’s preparation also demonstrates the growing importance of pre-production training for contemporary action films. Performers increasingly undergo specialised preparation before shooting, particularly when roles involve combat, stunts or physically demanding environments.

With Kalyani now based in Mumbai and continuing her rehearsals and action training, the project is moving toward its next production phase. For the actor, Pralay will mark her first major step into Bollywood, while for the filmmakers, it represents an entry into the zombie-thriller space.
