Mumbai, Feb 27 : Adar Poonawalla May Exit Dharma Stake
Karan Johar revealed in a recent conversation with Sarthak Ahuja that Adar Poonawalla, who acquired a 50 percent stake in Dharma Productions in 2024 for ₹1,000 crore, may eventually exit the partnership. “He is a businessman, and this is a business. At some point, he might look for an exit after 8–10 years or whenever he feels satisfied with the returns and creative fulfillment,” Karan said, noting that Poonawalla’s investment reflects both diversification and a love for the arts.
‘Naam Bade, Darshan Chhote’: Fame vs Bank Balance
Karan Johar also addressed perceptions around his lifestyle and wealth, admitting that his bank balance is modest compared to business magnates. “You look at my bank balance. I am nothing compared to a gazillion business heads. This is cinema ‘naam bada aur darshan chhote.’ The love people have for our work cannot be monetized,” he said. He emphasized that reputation and respect hold greater value than financial returns or personal lifestyle.
Insights on Industry Partnerships
Karan discussed broader trends of Indian film studios seeking partnerships with larger conglomerates. Referring to Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment and Universal Music, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s tie-up with Saregama, he said these deals offer operational comfort and long-term stability. “Older studios are looking for larger partners to avoid constant negotiations and buying-selling hurdles while making films,” he explained.
