MUMBAI, Sept 10: Kareena Kapoor has criticised what she described as a “herd mentality” in Bollywood, arguing that the industry should give greater importance to original storytelling and strong writing.
Speaking about current trends in Hindi cinema, the actor pointed to the success of Animal and said filmmakers often rush to reproduce elements of a successful movie rather than developing fresh ideas.
She observed that when one formula becomes commercially successful, several similar projects tend to follow, particularly when it comes to violent or intense narratives.
The actor contrasted this approach with Malayalam cinema, where writers are often given a more central role in shaping films. She expressed confidence that audiences are willing to embrace different kinds of stories when filmmakers offer them.
Her comments come amid continuing debate within the Hindi film industry over franchise-driven projects, remakes and the reliance on established commercial formulas.
Kapoor also expressed admiration for veteran performers and said she would be interested in watching a potential collaboration between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha under filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Her remarks have added to the ongoing conversation about whether Bollywood needs to move beyond proven formulas and encourage more experimentation in mainstream cinema.
